Stride

Physical inactivity is becoming a problem in our society. This final year degree project aims to tackle this issue with a simple solution - a design intervention that aims to inspire and motivate people to actively walk the city.

Stride interactive street signs would be scattered around Dublin City landmarks, cafes, restaurants and places of interest. The app would guide users through their walk along the city.

Interactive Street Signs & App

The app also offers a workout option. This

allows users to choose their preferred route, learn about the city and record the data such as number of steps walked, as they do their workout.

Workout

The main feature of this app is to guide you as you explore the city. Simply add in the locations you want to visit and the app will give you the optimum route. As you pass by the interactive signs on your route, the app will display information about the landmarks.

Interactive Feedback

Each sign encourages subtle interaction through the use of interactive feedback using lights, sound and mechanisms. The signs act as a symbol of the fight against physical inactivity in current generations.

As the app has two target audiences, tourists and locals looking to keep fit, it  was designed to showcase the same elements while reflecting different activities - tourism and fitness.

UI Design

Sign Design Process

To make these signs completely portable and lightweight, the technology used was kept to a minimum. A Raspberry Pi was programmed using Python to detect movement from an IR sensor placed at the top of the sign. Once the sensor is triggered, the Raspberry Pi launches the program and either plays music from the speakers, or lights up the sequenced LEDs, depending on the sign. The electronic components are placed in an injection-moulded polypropylene case to withstand the weather.
